Letters and Formal Comments

State attorneys general frequently use sign-on letters and formal comments to express their views on a variety of national issues.

This includes stating positions on legislation pending in Congress, regulations proposed by federal agencies, and nominations made by the President. The National Association of Attorneys General assists with the development of several letters each year that garner bipartisan support. Many other letters and comments, especially recently, are organized by separate (and often opposing) coalitions of Democratic and Republican AGs.

In addition to signalling the priorities of the AGs signing on to letters or comments, these actions are often precursors for subsequent legal actions challenging federal policy, such as executive orders and regulatory changes.
