State AGs frequently engage in coordinated investigations of alleged corporate misconduct. Frequently, these investigations end in significant multistate settlements.
Examples include the AGs’ $206 billion national settlement with the tobacco industry in 1998, as well as more recent multistate investigations into the foreclosure and opioid crises. These investigations and settlements seek to obtain both compensation for states and citizens, as well as to create new regulatory structures to prevent future corporate misconduct.
Since the late 1970s, when these coordinated multistate corporate investigations became more common, AGs have concluded hundreds of settlements collectively worth billions of dollars.
